George R. Tupper

George R. Tupper, 77, of Crandon, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008. George was born in Crandon on June 15, 1931, the youngest child of Orin Lester and Irene Winifred (nee McCormick) Tupper.
George was a member of the graduating Class of 1949 from Crandon High School. After graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Marines from 1949 to 1952. He was a member of the Fox Company 2nd Battalion 5th Marine Division and fought the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, nicknamed the "Fozen Chosin" or "The Chosin Few."
After receiving an honorable discharge in 1952, he returned to Crandon where he operated the A&W Rootbeer stand. He also operated the City Service Bulk Fuel Station with his brother, Frank.
On Jan. 31, 1954, at St. Josephﾕs Catholic Church, he married Charlene May. In 1959, they moved to Waukesha where he worked for Waukesha Bottle Gas Co. He later worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. as their first Allstate Insurance agent. He continued his insurance career working for Great Lakes Insurance Co., Milwaukee Mutual and Wisconsin No Fault Insurance Co., all of Milwaukee.
In 1976, after his wife Charlene became ill, they returned to Crandon where together they owned and operated Duck's Bar. After Charlene's death in 1983, he continued operating the bar until his retirement in 1987. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing, ice fishing, reading, watching old Western movies and attending the many athletic events that his grandchildren participated in. George especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He always looked forward to the holidays when everyone would be together. He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Nelson of Winterset, Iowa, Susan (Douglas) Hill of Crandon, Karen (Ted) Houle of Crandon, Nancy (David) Funk of Rhinelander and Carol Tupper of Bristol, Tenn.; son, Brian (Kathy) Tupper of Argonne; longtime companion, Carol Brown of Crandon; grandchildren, Clifford, Kristopher, Kevin, Kyle, Jennifer, Kadie, Kara, Kayla, Matthew, Michael, Marissa, Haley, Chase, Trevor, Colton, Connor and Carson; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Miya, Navada, Ariah, Mayzie, Korbin and Tanner; brother, Lawrence (Harriett) Tupper of Santa Barbara, Calif.; sisters, Margaret (Ralph) Brant of Orange, Calif., and Catherine Burke of Union, Tenn.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Charlene, he was also preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Edward, Bernard, Richard and Frank.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday, Oct. 18, at Weber-Hill Funeral Home, 302 S. Lake Ave., Crandon, with the Rev. Bill Farr officiating. Interment will be at Crandon Lakeside Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Forest County Veteran Honor Guard.
