Iva Lorraine Weigel (nee Cornish)

Iva Lorraine Weigel (nee Cornish), 92, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein, Iowa, after a short illness.

She was born Nov. 11 1916, in Lima, Iowa, to William and Maude (nee Bartie) Cornish.

She first married Walter "Lee" Maher, who preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1944. She then married her second husband, Charles "Chuck" Weigel, who preceded her in death June 19, 1967. Her significant other, Howard Rhoades, preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1996.

Iva graduated from Oelwein High School in 1936. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, the Red Hat Society and participated in Amputee Group In Waterloo, Iowa. Iva worked for Oelwein Chemical Company for 22 years.

She is survived by her niece, Linda Hermann of Waukesha, and nephews, Billy Coffman of Banger, Maine, and Doyle Cornish of Canyon County, Calif.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Arnola Cornish, Irvin Cornish, Helen Cornish, Wilma Coffman and Marie Wilcox (nee Robinson); her two husbands, Walter and Charles; significant other, Howard; nieces, Lorraine Landis (Coffman) and Dorthea Cornish; and nephews, Roland Cornish, Donald Cornish and Jack Cornish.

Visitation and services were held in March at Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein with Carol Hamilton officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in rural Oelwein.

A memorial fund has been established by the family in Iva’s name to go to Mercy Living Plus.
