Esmeralda Mayes Treen

Esmeralda Mayes Treen, 96, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at her home in Pasadena, Calif.

She had been involved in dogs - as a breeder, judge, writer and show official - for nearly 60 years. Her two books on Dalmatians, written with her late husband, Alfred E. Treen, were considered definitive for the breed in the 1980s and 1990s. She helped found the Waukesha Kennel Club and the Bichon Frise Kennel Club, judged at numerous national dog shows and received several awards from the American Kennel Club and the Dog Writers Association of America.

Survivors include a son, Joe Treen, of Montclair, N.J.; a daughter, Esmeralda T. Gibson, of Pasadena; and a granddaughter. At her request, there will be no services.
