Vera Grace Owen

Vera Grace Owen (nee Curphey), 94, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at her home in Oconomowoc. She was born in 1915 to William Thomas and Grace (nee Swanton) Curphey at the family farm on Highway P in the town of Ashippun. She was baptized at St. Paulís Episcopal Church in Ashippun.

Vera attended the Lincoln School in the town of Ashippun and graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1932. She graduated from the Dodge County Normal School of Mayville in 1933 and taught four years in one-room schools. In 1938, she purchased the Vogue Beauty Shop at 122 E. Wisconsin Ave. in Oconomowoc and operated it for 15 years with her sisters, Genevieve and June.

Vera married Willis Owen in 1940, and the couple raised four children - two boys and two girls. She became very involved with the Great Blue Heron Girl Scouts, acting as Cookie Chair for the Western District for 30 years. She was well known as the Moth Lady at Day Camp as she raised hundreds of Cecropia moths and happily shared her hobby with the girls. Vera was an active member of Zion Episcopal Church in Oconomowoc, serving as a Sunday school teacher and with the Christmas Crafts sale. She was a lifelong animal lover and took in many unwanted cats and orphaned animals, including squirrels, raccoons and even skunks. Vera was friendly to everyone and included many others for holiday and birthday celebrations.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Willis; brother and sister-in-law, Lester and Mary Curphey; sister, June Mansur; an infant sister, Eleanor; and granddaughter, Holly Owen.

She is survived by her sister, Genevieve (Edgar) Kanzenbach; children, Dr. Allen Owen, Constance (Gerald) Niedfeldt, Gail (Robert) Korb and Dean (Nicky) Owen; AFS exchange daughter Joan (Robert) Lee; grandchildren, Heather Owen, Jacey (Richard) Heller and Kyle (Eric) Zenz, Jason and Tyson Korb, Thomas (Betty) and Claire Owen; and many others in her loving family.

Services will be held with a visitation at 10 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11 at St. Paulís Episcopal Church, N982 Highway P in the town of Ashippun. The Rev. Tom Holtzen will be officiating. Burial will be held in LaBelle Cemetery in Oconomowoc.
