John Lars Petersen

John Lars Petersen was born to eternal life Thursday, April 16, 2009, at age 77.
He was the devoted husband of Nancy (nee Carini); loving father of William (Louise) Petersen, Linda (Gerald) Knutson, Susan Petersen, Robert (Maria) Petersen, Gina (Paul) Kurtz and James (Lisa) Petersen; caring grandfather of 15 grandchildren; brother of Richard (Cheryl) Petersen of Washington; brother-in-law of Domenic Carini and Vincent (Jeanne) Carini; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and John Christian Petersen, and a brother, Albert (Nora) of California.
John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from St. Charles Seminary in Baltimore and attended Catholic University for one year. After marriage to Nancy and moving to Milwaukee, he graduated from Marquette University and received his masterís degree from the University of Wisconsin. John joined the Navy in 1951, where he received a commendation for a heroic act.
John was a man of great faith who loved God, family and country in that order. He prayed for everyone but asked nothing for himself. In his earlier days, he was a member of St. Michaelís, St. Vincent de Paul Society, C.F.M., Knights of Columbus and many prayer groups.
An engineer by trade, John was an instructor at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later moved to Decatur, Ill., to work for Zexel. Throughout his life he made many friends and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at St. Lukeís Parish, 18000 W. Greenfield Ave, Brookfield. A prayer service and Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11:45 and noon, respectively. Military honors to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Wisconsin Right to Life or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Wisconsin Chapter are appreciated.
