Irma Clara Schiller

Oct. 3, 1909 – Nov. 26, 2009

Irma Clara Schiller of Waukesha peacefully entered her eternal home Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at the Linden-Grove Health Care Center at the age of 100. She was born in Ashland on Oct. 3, 1909, the daughter of William and Emma Fandek.

After her mother’s sudden death, Irma’s father was unable to care for his children and they were divided into various homes. Irma, from the time she was 11, was raised by a Lutheran pastor, Otto Hattstaedt. There she learned to cook, bake, sew, knit and take care of children. Irma continued to live with the family until she graduated high school in 1928. In 1931, she married LeRoy Schiller. Together they lived and worked in Waukesha and were active in their church, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where Irma taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of the Missionary Society. Irma was a tireless worker, helping friends and neighbors take care of their newborn babies. She also worked in retail at many of Waukesha’s former department stores: McCoy’s, Sullivan’s, Uhlenhopp’s and for 28 years she was a familiar, friendly face at Hoehle Drug Store, until her retirement in 1998, at the age of 89. Irma enjoyed playing cards, knitting and bowling. In 1997, she was inducted into the Waukesha Bowling Hall of Fame. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Irma will always be remembered for her positive spirit and her "this too shall pass" attitude.

Irma will be dearly missed by her daughter, Nadine Buechler; son-in-law, David Buechler; grandchildren, Jeff Buechler, Carrie (Carl) Sowers, Dale (Rhonda) Harper, John (Kris) Harper, Anne Pickett and Amy (Mike) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Emily, Peyton, Caitlyn, Carly, Alaina, Jason, David, Beth, Daniel and Hannah; and great-greatgrandchildren, William, Hunter, Paige, Emily, Casey, Brett and Abby. Irma is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; daughter, Johanna Buechler; son-in-law, Bill; brother, Ed; and sisters, Edna and Esther.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 700 Beechwood Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. The Rev. Arthur Koepsell will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (see address above) or to the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.

Irma’s family would like to send a special thank you to the many doctors, nurses and staff at LindenGrove Health Care Center for the exceptional, loving care they gave Irma during her stay.
