NORTH LAKE
Mary Jane McBroom
Dec. 6, 1913 – Nov. 30, 2009
Mary Jane McBroom of North Lake died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Shorehaven
Health Center in Oconomowoc. She would have been 96 years old Sunday, Dec.
6.
Both she and her husband were born and raised in the Twin Cities area of
Minnesota. After their marriage, they lived in various cities around the
country, finally settling in North Lake in 1951.
Mary Jane was always active in the community. When she had small children,
she was a leader in 4-H and scouting. She was instrumental in getting the
first kindergarten started in North Lake. She participated in AFS, and the
family hosted two exchange students. Mary Jane also was involved with the
Town Hall Library in North Lake and served on the boards of the library
and on the Friends of the Library.
One of Mary Jane’s great loves was her church. She was an active member
of the Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian Church (and its predecessor
church, North Lake Presbyterian) for more than 58 years. She was a Sunday
school teacher, served as clerk of the session, played in the handbell
choir and ran the annual rummage sale.
For many years, Mary Jane supported the Republican Party, working for
candidates and helping out in any way she could. She was always involved
in community issues and worked tirelessly promoting causes and referendums
she believed in. She also enjoyed tennis and continued playing into her
70s. Later in life, she provided rides for the elderly and visited
shut-ins.
A central focus of Mary Jane’s life was caring for her family. John K.
McBroom Sr., her husband of 61 years, died in 1998. They had four
children, John K. McBroom Jr., who is married to Judy; Mary Lou Findley;
Patricia M. McBroom, who died in 2005; and Bill McBroom. She had four
grandchildren, Susan Sprenger, married to Forest; Jeff McBroom; Paul
McBroom, married to Maureen; and Tom Findley, married to Meghan; as well
as five greatgrandchildren. All of her children live nearby on the family
farm. Two of the grandchildren now live there as well.
People who wish to remember Mary Jane with memorials may give to the
Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian church or the Town Hall Library in
North Lake.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Kettle
Moraine United Presbyterian Church, N66-W32690 Highway K in Stone Bank.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
