WAUKESHA

Roy J. Thater

Aug. 17, 1929 – Dec. 9, 2009

Roy J. Thater of Waukesha went to be with his Lord and his beloved K.T. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Angels-Grace Hospice at the age of 80. Roy was born in Washington, Mo., on Aug. 17, 1929, the son of Leo and Hilda Thater.

Roy attended St. Francis Borgia grade school, then served a seven-year apprenticeship to become a machinist. He went on to apply for a tool room machinist job at Ritepoint Inc. in Hermann, Mo. Not only did he get the job, but he also met the love of his life, Kathryn Berend, who saw the young man enter the office to apply and told a co-worker that she had just met her future husband.

Roy and K.T. were married April 19, 1952, at St. George Church in Hermann. Their son, Randy, was born in 1953. After living in Hermann, Washington and St. Louis while working for Ritepoint, Roy and family moved to Waukesha in 1958 to work for sister company Amron Corp. Their daughter, Connie, was born in 1959. Roy worked as a machinist, tool and die Maker, process engineer, chief project engineer and chief engineer for Amron at both Waukesha and Antigo plants before retiring in 1994.

Roy enjoyed working on cars, mowers, snowthrowers and anything else that didn’t work the way it should. He was an avid fisherman and bowler. He was always giving tips and encouragement to Connie and the rest of “Karl’s Girls” bowling team.

He was a member of St. William Catholic Church in Waukesha from 1958, when services were held at the Park Theater, until his death. He served as an usher and a minister of the Eucharist. He was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. William Conference. He helped out at the store, in particular he checked out all donations of a mechanical or electrical nature and made sure they were in proper working order for sale. Mostly, Roy took pleasure in helping others and was passionate about serving in the community.

Roy will be sadly missed by his son, Randy (Sherry) Thater of Waukesha; daughter, Connie (Karl) Csedo of Waukesha; grandchildren, Ryan, Rusty, Kyla and Brad; great-grandchildren, Renee, Lillia and River; brothers, Bob (Mary Alice) Thater and Lee (Lois) Thater; and sister, Ruth Scherer. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, many friends and “other daughters.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, K.T.; brothers, Walter and John; and sisters, Dorothy and Verna.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until the 4 p.m. memorial Mass on Sunday, Dec. 13, at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha, WI 53188. The Rev. Curt Frederick will officiate. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Waukesha.
