Aug. 6, 1917 - Nov. 21, 2008
Eleanor Oelstrom passed away Nov. 21 at 91 years. She had been a resident of Fairhaven Retirement Home, Whitewater, since 1992.
Eleanor (Van Putten) had been born in Waupun and graduated from Prospect Hall, Milwaukee, after which she met and married her husband, Milton, in 1940. They raised their family of four children in Wales, Wis., where she worked as a postmaster and stayed busy with PTA, Eastern Star and a multitude of church activities. In the early ‘60s the family moved to Waukesha, where she was employed at the high school business office, South Campus.
After losing her husband at age 48, Eleanor became an enthusiastic volunteer through RSVP. For more than 15 years, Eleanor, earning an MVP award, offered thousands of hours of help at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, United Way, tutoring at Whittier Elementary School, YWCA peanuts and many more local organizations. She later served on the Fairhaven board and continued to volunteer there after becoming a resident.
Eleanor is survived by one sister, Angeline Van Putten, Whitewater; four children, Maris Holloway, Union Grove, Neil Oelstrom, Portland, Maine, retired Gen. Tad Oelstrom (wife, Sandra Illing, previously of Waukesha), Boston, and Jeanne Oelstrom, Huntington Beach, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
We will miss our caring mother and all she gave to us, to her community and to her country.
