Edith ‘Edie’ Stephan

Edith "Edie" Stephan, 93, of Rome, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at her home. She was born on Jan. 3, 1916, in Summit Township in Waukesha County, to Frank and Elizabeth (Ehrlich) Stephan. She married Gilbert "Gib" Stephan on Jan. 18, 1939, in Nashotah. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 2003.
Edith was a very active member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rome, where she taught Sunday school for 20 years. She also taught the "Bethel Bible Series." She regularly attended an adult Bible class, was in charge of the "Cradle Roll" and participated in a "Prayer Chain." She was also a member of the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and of the Jefferson County Chapter of Thrivent.
She was a cook at Palmyra High School for many years in addition to helping her husband with farm work and raising her family. She was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed watching the wildlife in the Rome Pond area. She was a member of the Rome Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Surviving are two sons, Robert (Nancy) Stephan and Barry (Pauline) Stephan, both of Sullivan; two grandsons, Paul (Vicki) Stephan and Aaron (Elizabeth Kozub) Stephan; one granddaughter, Deanna (Shawn) Cannon; one sister, Mabel Finney of Eagle; one brother, Richard (Frances) Stephan of Dousman; four great-grandchildren, Bryce, Neva and Emily Stephan and Chloe Cannon; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She also was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Norman, Albert, Walter and Robert Stephan; and two sisters, Bertha Lean and Dorothy Pynakker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rome, with the Rev. Bradley R. Lindberg officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Lutheran Cemetery in Rome.
Friends may call at the Olsen Funeral Home in Jefferson, 221 S. Center Ave., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Friday
