Ernst F. Schnook

May 2, 1940 - Dec. 31, 2008

Ernst F. Schnook, 68, died Dec. 31, 2008, at home, surrounded by his family, pets, books and a lifetime of personal momentos. He was born May 2, 1940, in Lauenstein, Germany.

Ernst was a U.S. Army veteran, foundryman, foundry engineer, and a foundry and social studies teacher at Milwaukee Area Technical College. He was a social activist who worked to change policies in order to improve the lives of working people. He was the inspirational past president of the American Federation of Teachers Local No. 212, and a proud member of the anti-war movement. Most recently, Ernst was active in the election campaign of Barak Obama. Ernst leaves a legacy of compassion, hard work, intellectual honesty and leadership for others to emulate.

Ernst had a passion for young people and education. His lifeís work was the thousands of students whom he inspired. He believed that intellectual curiosity was the first step toward emancipation and that education was the silver bullet in improving the lives of working people.

He is the beloved husband, friend, companion and confidant of Josiane (nee Boisseau); proud father of Fred (Darlene) Schnook, Ernst (Vittoria) Schnook, Josie (Murat) Gultekin and Charlotte (Erdal) Kasa; beloved "Opa" or grandfather of Darlene (Jamie), Ernie, Mellissa, Zachary, Bonnie, Emma and Julian; brother of Peter (Sharon) Etter, Brigitte Lopez and Elsa (James) Lax; and is further survived by other relatives, friends and numerous students.

Memorials may be dedicated to the Ernst Schnook Scholarship Fund at the Milwaukee Area Technical College Foundation, 700 State St., Milwaukee, WI 53233.

As per Ernstís wishes, no formal funeral will be held. However, an informal celebration of life will be held at the Milwaukee Area Technical College-Downtown Campus from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, with a program to start at 5 p.m.
