Maxine Lois Schmidt

Maxine Lois Schmidt passed away early Sunday morning, June 14, 2009, at Clarence Nursing Home in Clarence, Iowa. She had recently been in poor health.

Maxine was born April 25, 1925, to Arthur and Mae (nee Noblet) Blomgren, near Cresco, Iowa. She grew up in the Cresco vicinity until her family moved in 1934. Her family then moved to various communities in Waukesha County, including Eagle and Palmyra. In her teens, she worked for Dr. Ridgeway in Elkhorn. On Jan. 24, 1944, in East Troy, she married Albert Schmidt of Elkhorn. She worked for Oak Industries in Elkhorn. She lived on the Schmidt Brothers Dairy Farm on Schmidt Road in rural Elkhorn. After her husbandís death in 1963, she continued to live on the farm with her family and her brother-in-law, Edwin Schmidt. She was an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers, an exceptional genealogist and fan of the Old West. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elkhorn, until her move back to Iowa in 2000. She then lived in Lowden and Clarence.

She is survived by three children, Mary (Don) Christman, Connie (Clayton) Hudson and Thomas Schmidt; eight grandchildren, Gary (Kelly Brown) Christman of Ellsworth, Eric Christman of Tennessee, Adam Christman and Daniel (Heather) Hudson of Wonder Lake, Ill., (Steven) Eden Dreyer of Milwaukee, Benjamin (Angel) Hudson of Marengo, Ill., Rian Christman of Florida and William Hudson of Wonder Lake; and seven great-grandchildren, Jesse Christman of Marion, Iowa, Bethany Christman of Tennessee, Amelia Hudson of Bristow, Va., Brianna and Carissa Hudson of Wonder Lake, Aiden Christman of Florida and Olivia Dreyer of Milwaukee. A great-grandson is due in July. She also is survived by two stepgreat-granddaughters, Makayla and Chloe Bowles of Marengo; a sister, Mavis Wam of Beloit; brothers, Arlyn (Ruth) Blomgren of Jefferson, Darrell (Audrey) Blomgren of Wisconsin Dells and Ronald Blomgren of Condon, Ore.; 40 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a son in infancy, Albert Schmidt; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Schmidt; a brother in infancy, Dennis Blomgren; a sister, Donna Hale; brothers-in-law, Wesley Wam and Frank Hale; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wilhelm (Hattie) Schmidt, (Edwin) Elizabeth Stahl, Amelia Schmidt, Emil Schmidt, Erich Schmidt, Gustav (Loretta) Schmidt, Edwin Schmidt, (Elmer) Ericka Kiernan, (Francis) Alvina Cantwell, Hilda Schmidt, Irma Schmidt, Gerhardt (Juanita) Schmidt and Edna Wahlstedt; a niece; and four nephews.

A memorial service will he held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at First Lutheran Church, Elkhorn. Burial will be in Hazel Ridge Cemetery, Elkhorn.
