Robert ‘Bob’ Schmitz

Robert "Bob" Schmitz of Waukesha died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 85. Bob was born June 15, 1924, the son of Sylvester and Ramona Schmitz.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mildred "Millie" Horton on June 10, 1950. Bob was a charter member of St. William Catholic Church in Waukesha. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was on the City of Waukesha Fire Department for 31 years, retiring as fire inspector. After his wife died, Bob began a second career as a volunteer greeter at the Waukesha County Courthouse/Administration Center.

Bob will be dearly missed by his children, Steven (Joyce) Schmitz of Waukesha, Patti Schmitz of Waukesha and Mary Kay Knoll of Sun Prairie. He is the loving grandfather of Jenny, Stephie, Ray III, Jason, Justin and Andy. Bob is further survived by 10 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Millie.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, 237 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha. The family will share memories at 6:30 p.m. The funeral Mass for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Waukesha.

Memorials may be directed to the family, which will go toward an appropriate World War II veterans organization.

The family would like to thank the employees of the kidney dialysis unit at Waukesha Memorial Hospital for the care they provided to Bob and the coffee group at Christina's for the good fellowship. A special thanks to everyone at the Waukesha County Courthouse and Administration Center who would stop and say hello or shoot the breeze with Bob and make his days more enjoyable.
