Mary Agnes Horkan (nee Byrnes)

Mary Agnes Horkan (nee Byrnes), age 87, entered God’s loving arms
Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan.
30, 1923, to James and Mae Byrnes in Winfield Township, Sauk County.
She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard Horkan; cherished mother of Debra Horkan; grandmother of Chad (Christine)
Horkan and Garrett Horkan; and great-grandmother of Cassie, Tanner and
Cole Horkan. She is deeply loved by her many caregivers and friends. She
will be especially missed by her dog, Sadie.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers,
Emmett and Kenneth Byrnes.
Mary Agnes was a devoted educator whose teaching
career spanned 58 years. She graduated from Sauk County Normal School in
Reedsburg. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1953, a master’s degree in
elementary education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958 and
a doctor of philosophy degree in educational administration from UWMadison
in 1986.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday, April 10, at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 W. National Ave., New
Berlin, followed by a candlelight prayer service. Visitation continues
from 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday, April
12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Ave., Waukesha.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Calvary Cemetery, Reedsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to
The Caring Place, Adult Daycare Center, Waukesha.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to
everyone who cared so lovingly for Mary Agnes for the past eight years.
