The Rev. Dwain M. Olson

The Rev. Dwain M. Olson of Waukesha passed away peacefully with his family by his side Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the age of 84. He was born May 9, 1926, the son of Edward and Mabelle Olson in Minneapolis, Minn., and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota and Wartburg Seminary, then served churches in Omaha, Middleton and Waukesha, retiring as pastor from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in 1991. He was the founding chaplain for the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, chaplain for the Waukesha Police Department and founded the chaplaincy program at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. He taught "spirituality" at the Lawrence House Drug Treatment Center and served as a moderator of Cooperating Churches of Greater Waukesha.

The Rev. Olson named University Drive. He enjoyed 62 years with his wife, Joan, and together they hosted visitors through AFS, the Friendship Force and the International Institute. He was an Eagle Scout and loved birdwatching, traveling, reading and woodcarving.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Joan, whom he married Dec. 18, 1948; his children, Daniel (Bonnie) of Forest Hills, N.Y., David (Debora) of Brookfield, Jillayne (David) Arena of Milwaukee and Joni of Waukesha; his grandchildren, Joseph, Carolyn, Katherine, Douglas, Emily, Elizabeth, Andrew and Julia; and other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. memorial service today, Dec. 18, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 601 N. University Drive, Waukesha. The Rev. Ed Ruen will officiate and the Rev. Jeffrey Barrow, bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod, ELCA, will preach. A reception will follow at the church. A private burial will take place at a later date.
