Robert B. Sandman Sr.

July 20, 1923 – Jan. 11, 2010

Robert B. Sandman Sr., 86, of Waukesha, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at his home. He was born July 20, 1923, in Bogalusa, La., to Otto and Martha (Breest) Sandman.

Bob was married for 59 years to the love of his life, Mildred Sell, on April 21, 1945. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2004. He dearly missed her.

Bob was a member of St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waukesha. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1941 to 1946. He then worked and retired from Allis Chalmers in 1982. Robert was a skilled artist and took pride in the banners he painted honoring family achievements and celebrations. He spent his summer days outside tending to his lawn and vegetable garden.

Robert is lovingly survived by his three children, Sherry (Dennis) Tollefson of Waukesha, Robert Jr. (Carrie) Sandman of Oconomowoc and Steven (Donna) Sandman of Shiloh, Ill. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, who with love called him "Papa," Mike (Angie) Tollefson of O’Fallen, Mo., Marc (Julie) Tollefson of Frisco, Texas, Andrew (Sara) Sandman of Sheboygan, Melissa (Chad) McKeen of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Sarah Sandman (special friend Brandon Irish) of Sioux City, Iowa, Ryan Sandman (special friend Jessica Lueders) of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Stephanie Sandman of St. Louis, Mo., Kyle Sandman of Shiloh, Ill.; 10 great-grandchildren, Nick and Miranda Tollefson, Sean, Elisha and Alex Tollefson, Beau and Elysia Sandman, Cassie McKeen, Marlo Irish and Logan Sandman; and cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Mildred, Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Per Robert’s request, he was cremated.

A memorial visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service Saturday, Jan. 16, at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 380 W. Bluemound Road, Waukesha.
