June 25, 1920 – July 29, 2010
Warren
C. "Smitty" Schmidt of Waukesha died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at
his home in Avalon Square at the age of 90. Warren was born June 25, 1920,
at 1200 Buena Vista Ave., Waukesha, the son of Herman and Nell Schmidt.
Nell’s father had built the first house on Buena Vista Avenue. He grew
up on Moor Downs Golf Course, having begun playing the game at the age of
11 and loving golf all of his life.
Warren married Arlys McGowan on April 18, 1942,
before leaving for the Army Air Force in World War II. Warren and Arlys
had three children: Mary Lynn, Donald Charles and Michael Robert (Linda).
Warren was a true family man and was close to his children as they grew
up. He loved his grandchildren: Tim (Emily) Schmidt, Becky (Darren) Ginsch
and Katie (Chris) Mulloy. Smitty was happy he lived long enough to enjoy
his great-grandchildren: Alison Schmidt, Brianna and Evan Ginsch, and
Elliot and Gavin Mulloy.
Smitty was a member of St. William’s Parish in Waukesha and worked at
Kearney & Trecker Corp. in West Allis for 45 years. While at Kearney
& Trecker, he was a steward and vice president of the IAM Union.
Active in the Civil Rights Movement, Smitty marched with Father Groppe in
the open house movement in Milwaukee and was proud to have done so the
rest of his life.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Mary Lynn; son,
Donald; his sister, Dorothea Nelson; and his brother, Adrian Schmidt.
Per Smitty’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. He will be
cremated and his remains will be buried at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in
Waukesha. His family will attend a private service and burial. In the near
future, there will be a celebration of Smitty’s life for all who knew
him.
