Elsie M. Waalkes (nee Matel) passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Seasons Hospice in Waukesha, at the age of 86. Born July 15, 1923, in Muskegon, Mich., she was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Elsie Matel.
Elsie graduated from Muskegon High School in 1941 and from Michigan State College in 1948. Elsie married the love of her life, Donald J. Waalkes, on March 3, 1951, in Muskegon.
Elsie had a sense of humor that endeared her to many. She loved her family and friends and greatly enjoyed planning and participating in social occasions, including dinner parties and bridge marathons. As a young woman, she was an avid golfer, and as a mother and wife living in Brookfield from 1956 to 2005, she was an avid bridge player. An enthusiastic shopper, she was also an enthusiastic fan of Michigan State and Wisconsin Badgers football. She was active for decades at St. Edmundís Episcopal Church in Elm Grove, and was a volunteer for many years at St. Johnís Home in Milwaukee.
Elsie is survived by her daughter, Nancy Feichtmeier (Peter) of Pewaukee; her son, Jeffrey (Jane) of Whitefish Bay; three granddaughters, Amie Schneider, Catherine Waalkes and Claire Feichtmeier; three grandsons, Michael Schneider, Peter J. Feichtmeier and Joseph Feichtmeier; nieces, Mary Nellis (nee Corliss), Marie Waalkes, Ruth Mary Waalkes and Holly Matel; and nephews, Norman Corliss, Jay Waalkes and David Waalkes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; daughter, Linda M. Schneider (Ken) of St. Charles, Ill.; her parents; her brother, Joseph; and other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. service Monday, May 24, at Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Ave., Brookfield.
