Ward K. Peterson

Ward K. Peterson, 87, of Shawano, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at the Evergreen Care Center in Shawano, where he had been a resident for the past four years.

Ward was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Shawano, the son of the the late Oscar and Esther (Leitzke) Peterson, and was raised on their farm one half mile north of Thornton.
On Sept. 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to the former Norma Lander in Milwaukee. Norma preceded him in death in February of 1988. On Nov. 26, 1988, he married Marjorie (Beilfuss) Rosenow in Bonduel.

Following graduation from Bonduel High School, Ward served in the U.S. Army. He served as a military policeman and was stationed in Bamberg, Germany.

Upon returning from the service, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in dairy science. Next, Ward was employed as a public health sanitarian for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services for 22 years until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel. Ward served as the president of the Wisconsin Food and Milk Sanitarians. He was also a member of the Shawano Area Writers.

In 1997, he authored his family history, “Grandpa Remembers.”

Ward was well-known for the beautiful poems and stories he frequently wrote. He loved music and dancing. In 1991, he and his wife, Marge, were chosen King and Queen of the Shawano Oktoberfest by the Shawano Area Chamber of Commerce. For many years he enjoyed golfing and their second home in North Fort Meyers, Fla.

Ward is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Shawano; his children, Miles (Mary) Peterson of Ramona, Okla., and Linda (Jim) Dallman-Repp of Waukesha; his stepchildren, Ronald (Wendy) Rosenow of Shawano and Regis (Richard) Gosz of Kaukauna; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents and first wife, Norma, Ward was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Boerst; a brother, Stanford Peterson; and one son in-law, Jeff Dallman.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Nov. 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Bonduel. The Rev. Timothy Shoup will officiate. Entombment will be at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield. Military rites will be conducted at the church by the Shawano American Legion Post #117.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church in the name of Ward Peterson.

The family would like to sincerely thank the caregivers at Evergreen Care Center for the compassion and care that Ward received during his stay at the facility, as well as Ward’s many dear friends, especially Marcie Leitzke.
