Arlene (nee Wold) Hass-Friedrichsen

Arlene (nee Wold) Hass-Friedrichsen of Waukesha died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the age of 92. Arlene was born July 10, 1918, in Spring Grove, Minn., to Peter and Clara (Tomeraasen) Wold. She was the youngest of seven children.

Arlene will be dearly missed by her children, David (Katrina) Hass of Milwaukee, Kathy Hass of Kihei, Hawaii, and Timothy (Rue) Hass of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren, Lisl (John) Gapinski, Clariel Hass and Anaiah (Matt) Eilen; stepgrandson, Andrew Artman; great-granddaughter, Natalie Jane Gapinski; and brother, Russell Wold of Sister Bay. Arlene is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and the many friends she made during her time living at Avalon Square.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard C. Hass, in 1973; second husband, John S. Friedrichsen, in 2004; a sister, Blanche Renslo; and brothers, Perley Wold, Myron Wold, Vernon Wold and Glennis Wold.
Since 1973, she annually gave evergreen seedlings to the members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in memory of her husband, Howard, a soil and water conservationist. Today more than 16,000 evergreens enhance the greening of Waukesha County. Arlene was also an active member and president of the Waukesha Women’s Club and Spring City Garden Club, as well as a member of the Waukesha Service Club. In the ’60s and ’70s, she and her husband, Howard, owned and operated Olde Meadowbrook Riding Academy in Waukesha. She was also instrumental in the establishment of the Fox River Sanctuary on College Avenue in Waukesha. Arlene was a homemaker who was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She will always be remembered for her valued volunteering throughout the Waukesha Community.

Arlene’s family wishes to thank the staffs of Avalon Square Arbor, Waukesha Memorial Hospital and Asera Hospice for the wonderful care provided. A special thanks to Arlene’s friends, Jeanne Erickson, Lucille Laburdi and Loretta Bandino; and niece, Clarie Broste.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service Tuesday, Oct. 19, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 424 Hyde Park Ave., Waukesha, WI 53188. The Rev. Larry Smith will be officiating. A private family burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha.
