Evelyn B. Zimmerman

July 9, 1909 - Dec. 20, 2010

Evelyn B. Zimmerman, 101, went peacefully into Gods loving hands Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at LindenGrove Nursing Home in Waukesha.

The former Evelyn Bessie Peterson was born on July 9, 1909, in LaGrange Township, Walworth County. She was the sixth child and only daughter of Edwin C. and Bergina Hansen Peterson. Evelyns twin brother died at the early age of 2 months. Her Norwegian parents were both teachers.

Evelyn grew up on a family farm near Palmyra and Whitewater. She graduated from Whitewater Normal School (now UW-Whitewater) in 1929 with a teaching degree, and taught school near Whitewater.

On June 27, 1934, Evelyn and Marcus T. Zimmerman were married in the Scuppernong Lutheran Church in Palmyra (now St. Matthew Lutheran Church). They lived for many years on the Zimmerman farm east of Whitewater, where Marcus farmed and was known for raising and training fine teams of work horses in his spare time. Five of their children were born there. Evelyn became a 4-H leader, and all of the children became 4-H members eventually.

Evelyn was known for her love for music as she sang in church choirs and played the clarinet, piano and harmonica. She was also known for her spectacular flower gardens.

In the spring of 1948, the family moved to a larger farm north of Palmyra, where the rest of the children were born. Evelyn studied at night to finish nurses training and was a nurse at the Wisconsin Masonic Home in Dousman for more than 20 years.

Following their retirement, Marcus and Evelyn moved to Brodhead, where they lived until Marcuss death in 1987. Evelyn moved back to Palmyra-Dousman-Eagle area to be closer to family.

Besides her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur, Maurice, Leonard, Clarence and Edwin B. Peterson; one son Lee, at birth; and two grandsons.

She is survived by three sons and four daughters, Arnold (Nancy) Zimmerman of Downers Grove, Ill., Carol (Francis) Gombar of Brodhead, Darlene Widish of Oconomowoc, Loren Zimmerman (Becky) of Phillips, Barb Lewiston (Craig) of Eagle, Rebecca Kenast of Palmyra and Roy Zimmerman of Palmyra.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday, April 9, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 313 Main St., Palmyra, with the Rev. Steven Blyth officiating.
