Stephen ‘Steve’ Richard Warnock

June 6, 1953 - April 1, 2011

Stephen "Steve" Richard Warnock passed away Friday, April 1, 2011, at the age of 57. He was born in Richmond, Ind., but grew up in Madison.

He earned an engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and his job at GE Health Care took him to live in Syracuse, N.Y., before he transferred back home to Wisconsin. He met his wife, Darlene, at GE and they’ve lived in Pewaukee since 1985.

Steve lived somewhat of a double life. During the week, he was a hard-working mechanical engineer; however, when the weekend came around, he was transformed into a boat racer. Steve raced outboard hydroplanes for more than 30 years, during which he was designing and building his own race boats, working on engines, winning several national titles, two world titles and setting speed records. Summers took him and his family to various states every weekend for races, but his love for the sport didn’t stop there - he was a leading political figure in both the local and national racing organizations. He served as commodore for the local club (BSOA) for most of the past two decades and was often appointed or elected to national committees. He was always good for a smile, laugh or kind explanation. He took great joy in coaching people on life, on racing, on mechanics or engineering. Steve was a library of experience and information open to all, and in this way he touched more lives than he realized.

Steve took pride in his work and accomplishments, loved both his blood family and his racing family with all his being, and left many teary eyes and beautiful memories behind.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene (nee Heinemann); children, Rachel and Michael; brother, Philip and his wife, Sandy; nephew and niece, Scott and Jamie; and his cousin, Lynn.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. memorial service Saturday, April 9, at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 380 Bluemound Road (at highways J and JJ, four blocks south of Interstate 94), Waukesha.

Church and Chapel Rudolph-Larsen Bros. Funeral Home is serving the family. For more information, call 549-0659 or visit to view the online obituary, leave condolences or receive directions.

May he race in peace.
