John E. Garity

John E. Garity, 87, formerly of Sullivan, passed away April 27, 2011, at LindenGrove in Waukesha. John was born Dec. 23, 1923, to Paul S. and Catherine (nee Coffey) Garity in Sullivan.

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in England. During World War II, from 1942 to 1945, he flew more than 30 missions as a tail gunner for the 8th Air Force and received the Air Medal, four Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He returned to work at Hein Werner (changed to Acherman) as a machinist in Waukesha. John was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church and lived on the Garity homestead, where he retired. He played baseball for Land ‘o Lakes and also played basketball in Sullivan.

Survivors include his sisters, Florence Lambrecht of Oconomowoc, Mildred "Millie" VanDorf of Antigo and Irene (Harvey) Eppers of Waukesha; his sister-in-law, Anna Mae Garity of Oconomowoc; and his nieces and nephews, John (Sandra) Epers, Joseph (Gabriele) Eppers, Richard Eppers, Judy (Ron) Low, Shirly (Lee) Garton, Fred (Charlene) VanDorf, Janet (Robert) Minor and Mary Seiz.

John was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Garity, Agnes Chapel and Dorothy "Dolly" Olsen; two brothers, Ralph and Leroy Garity; and a nephew, Paul Olsen.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday, April 30, Schmidt & Bartelt Notbohm-Kreutzmann Funeral Home, 121 S. Cross St., Oconomowoc. His final rest will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Kidney Foundation are appreciated.
