Winifred ‘Peg’ Wood

July 10, 1926 - April 24, 2011

Winifred "Peg" Wood, 84, died at her Everett, Wash., residence Sunday, April 24, 2011, Easter Sunday.

Peg Wood was born July 10, 1926, in Brookings, Ore., to Margaret A. and George G. Wood. She grew up in Appleton and graduated from Appleton High School in June 1944. Peg earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 from the Wisconsin State Teachers College in Milwaukee, and a master’s degree in 1976, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

She taught elementary and junior high school in Wisconsin public schools and in the Micronesian Islands of U.S. Trust Territory in the Pacific. Peg retired in 1991 from her post at Ethan Allen School in Wales, ending a 40-year career in teaching.

Peg loved to travel, and during her stay in the Micronesian Islands, she learned to scuba dive, studied invertebrate zoology and amassed a collection of coral that she later donated to the Milwaukee Public Museum. She will always be remembered for her humor and love of the outdoors and adventure.

Peg is survived by her four children, James Greivell, Ellen Hopkins, Nancy Moreyra and Jean Wiersma; six grandchildren, Jenny, Jessica, Josephine, Scott, Emela and Ariana; and one sister, Mary Sturtevant of Appleton.
