– Aug. 6, 2011
She was born on a farm March 26, 1914, near St. Peter, Minn., a daughter of Herman and Emma (nee Eckberg) Nelson. After graduating from a oneroom school, she went to town and stayed at a home doing chores for room and board while attending high school.
She married Einar Eilertson in 1938. After she was married, she lived in Minneapolis while her husband attended the university and then moved to Waukesha in 1950 when her husband came to teach German and later Russian at Carroll College. Doris was employed by the Waukesha school system, serving as a study hall teacher and then as a textbook librarian. For 61 years she was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, where she served on the altar guild and participated in circle, Bible study and quilting group, making blankets for Lutheran World Relief.
Doris was active in the Carroll women’s group. Neighbors took notice of her vegetable and flower gardens. The family looked forward to her homemade yeast buns. Family Christmas trees were full of handmade ornaments, serving as a reminder of her love for crafts.
