Nancy E. Sobczak
Nancy E. Sobczak (nee Laning) passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at age 60 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her devoted husband of 39 years, Robert, was at her side. She is also survived by numerous loving cousins and wonderful, supportive friends. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Ralph and Cele Laning; her loving sister, Irene Laning Mason; and by many loving uncles and aunts.
Nancy was an extremely accomplished professional woman. After growing up on a dairy farm in Dousman, she worked in training, engineering, marketing, and management positions at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, IBM, ITT, Johnson Controls, Allen-Bradley, GE, Square D, other companies, and family businesses. She earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1970, a master’s degree in 1972, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 2007, all from Marquette University. She served two terms on the State of Wisconsin Examining Board of Professional Engineers. Nancy was awarded two U.S. patents. She became a licensed private pilot in 1975. Nancy had many diverse passionate interests, including singing, sewing, gourmet cooking, herbal remedies, Marquette basketball, flying, and air racing.
She was a selfless family caregiver and gifted personal coach who truly enjoyed helping others and watching them grow successfully. Nancy will truly be missed by everyone whose life she touched.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 at Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee 53233. Private interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee. Relatives and friends may meet with the family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Saturday at the church.
