Hazel M. Northey
Hazel M. Northey, 89, of Dousman, passed away
Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. She was born in Wausau to Henry and Martha Keays
(nee Strege).
Hazel attended Wausau High School. She played the
violin in the orchestra, was active in the yearbook and wrote many school
assembly skits. She loved writing and continued writing letters and
corresponding with people throughout her life. She attended the Wausau
Teacher’s College and took her first job as a teacher in the Hebron
School in Hebron.
She was active in the Hebron young adult group
where she met Richard Northey. They married on July 14, 1945, in Hebron.
Hazel and Richard were active in the schools and
community organizations. Hazel was involved with the Homemakers and Ladies
Aid Society. They were members of the Siloam Methodist Church, where
Richard played organ and Hazel was involved in Christian education. Later
they became members at the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church. Hazel
continued her interest in writing by putting together a church cookbook.
The book included some history of the Pleasant Valley Church and the
famous recipes collected from all the farm housewives.
Hazel was also a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star. Hazel and Richard moved from Stone Fences farm into the
Masonic Three Pillars complex in Dousman in 1991. They were one of the
first couples to move into the complex. They used to remind their children
that they moved into the apartment two days before the carpet arrived in
the third story hallways.
Hazel and Richard were involved in the Golden Lazer Seniors that meet at Brandybrook School.
Hazel continued her writing and skit telling
skills by performing her own one-gal show. She developed stories she would
recite with costumes and all.
Hazel is survived by her children, Alice Carr Lundstrom, Linda Northey, Jane Northey, Sue (Mike) Wood and Thomas Northey;
grandchildren, Jeff Carr, Paul (Maria) Carr, Sarah Wood and Rich Wood;
great-granddaughter, Illie Carr; along with her only remaining cousin,
Wynonna Feuske.
A memorial service for Hazel will be held at 10
a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 36821 Sunset
Drive, Dousman.
