Griffith
"Griff" H. Howell, 73, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at The
Heritage with his caring family by his side. Griff was born June 19, 1937,
in Milwaukee, to Delbert and Gwendolyn (Williams) Howell of Waukesha,
where he was raised on a farm.
Griff participated in many 4-H and FFA animal projects.
He graduated from Waukesha High School in 1955 and from the University of
Wisconsin-River Falls four years later. His interest in agriculture turned
to chemistry and he received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and math.
In 1959, he moved to Manitowoc to teach math and science and coach
ninth grade basketball. Griff married Lois Heller on Dec. 23, 1961. After
teaching for five years, they moved to Appleton and he worked in the paper
industry for 30 years. Griff officiated for the WIAA for 31 years and was
inducted into the Officials Hall of Fame in the Fox Cities. He was very
proud of his Welsh heritage with family coming from both north and south
Wales.
Griff is survived by his wife, Lois of Menasha; four
children, Kevin (Holly) Howell of Appleton, Julie (Todd) Pyszora of
Waukesha, Kyle (Kelley Hoey) Howell of West Concord, Minn., Bryan (Mindy)
of Appleton; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Howell, Emily and
Rachel Pyszora, Ryan and Ayden Hoey-Howell and Lexi Howell; and cousins,
other relatives and many friends.
Griff was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today,
March 2, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton.
Visitation continues from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service
Thursday, March 3, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Ave.,
Appleton, with the Rev. Kathy Keener-Han officiating. Interment will be in
the Jerusalem United Presbyterian Welsh Cemetery in Wales.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to
his doctors, nurses and the rest of the caring staff in the Theda Care
system that helped Griff.
