David D. Gates

MADISON - David D. Gates, 89, of Madison, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at HospiceCare. He was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Fridley, Minn., the son of Robert and Mary Gates.

David married Mary Margaret Saddy on March 3, 1947, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Madison. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard on the Hyacinth. David retired from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, where he worked in Madison and Waukesha. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church. David was an avid golfer (three holes-in-one), cyclist and triathlete.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; five children, David E. (Barbara) Gates of Dousman, Mary (Gary Hermansen) Gates of Los Altos, Calif., John (Michele) Gates of Middleton, Zann (Jeff Roush) of Davis, Calif., and Paul (Mary Ableman) Gates of Fall River; three grandchildren, Michael (Susan) Gates of Eagle, Matthew (Heather) Gates of Watertown and Leigh Hermansen of Milwaukee; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Steven and Jacob Gates; and a sister, Harriet Stern of Houston, Texas.

David was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Gates; and sisters, Ruth Wahlgren, Edith McDermott and Esther Holt.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial on Monday, Oct. 10, at St. Dennis Catholic Church, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison. Private burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.
