Alton ‘Butch’ Erickson Jr.

Alton “Butch” Erickson Jr. died unexpectedly in his sleep of an apparent heart attack Sunday, Aug. 26,  2012, at age 49. Butch was born in Green Bay on Nov. 11, 1962, the son of Alton Sr. and Jeanette (Hackbarth) Erickson.

The family moved to Sheboygan, where Butch attended Pigeon River Elementary and Urban Junior High. He graduated from Howards Grove High School in 1981. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, Lakeland College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also obtained an associate degree from Lakeshore Technical College.

Butch married Kathy Hueller on April  8, 1989, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sheboygan. They were blessed with a son, Austin James, on July 7, 1995, and a daughter, Amanda Jeanette, on Nov. 9, 1998. After commuting to Waukesha for three years, the family moved to Wales in 2001 to be closer to Butch’s job.

Butch started working at an early age with a paper route, and then worked at Schultz’s Restaurant, JL French Corp. and Verifine Dairy, paying his way through college. In 1994, he went into business for himself as owner and operator of Erickson Distributing for four years until he tired of the long hours and sold the business. He has been with Golden Guernsey Dairy since 1998, working various positions, most recently as a sales representative.

Butch enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting with friends, working outside in the yard, remodeling the house, fishing, golfing, playing softball and coaching. He coached baseball, basketball and soccer for many years. Butch served his community as a member of the Wales Park Board beginning in 2002. He was a founding member of the annual Wales Summer Splash and enjoyed planning and working the event each summer.

Butch was a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was strong in his faith and was preparing to do mission work in Joplin, Mo., and the Dominican Republic. He was a very devoted and loyal husband and father. He had a great work ethic, rarely missing a day of work. Butch had a fun-loving spirit, a good sense of humor and always had a smile on his face.

Butch is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kathy; his son, Austin (17); his daughter, Amanda (13); his father, Alton Sr. (June) Erickson of Howards Grove; his sisters, Sharon (Tom) Grasse of Elkhart Lake, Jennifer (Steve) Weissgerber of Sheboygan and Jeanne Erickson (Marie Grapentine) of Manitowoc; his brother, Mark (Collette) Erickson of Milwaukee; nieces and nephews, Erica (Jeff) Dennis, Jessica Jones, Nikki Grasse, TJ Grasse, and Lauren and Zoe Erickson; stepsister, Cindy (Larry) Meyer; and his stepbrothers, Ernst (Connie) Wuestenhagan and Dale (Jean) Wuestenhagen. He is further survived by his parents-in-law, Robert and Elizabeth Hueller of Sheboygan; his brother-in-law, Daniel (Jenifer) Hueller of Joplin, and their children, Abraham, Emma and Annie; a nephew, Dustin Joseph; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Erickson.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 p.m. until the 7 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Bethlehem Lutheran, 470 N. Oak Crest Drive, Wales. A gathering will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Good Shepherd Lutheran, 1614 S 23rd St., Sheboygan.
