Aug. 12, 1944 - Nov. 13, 2012

Raymond (Ray) Thomas Heizer III of Concord, Calif., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, after a brave fight with brain cancer. He was 68 years old.

He was born Aug. 12, 1944, in Boston, Mass., to Raymond Thomas Heizer Jr. and Harriet Dean (Squires) LeMoine. Ray grew up in Oconomowoc. He graduated in 1962 from Oconomowoc High School and 1966 from Yale University with an engineering degree. After graduating from college, he joined the Peace Corps and went to Iran for two years. He married Hannelore Trochim, a German Peace Corps volunteer, on Dec. 22, 1967, in Teheran, Iran.

Ray had many different interests in his life and was always ready to try something new. He worked in the field of desalination, making freshwater from seawater, which took him four years to Saudi Arabia. In 1982, he founded Heizer General and later Heizer Software, which he sold in 1996. After that, he started Heizer Strategic Services, an investigating firm from which he retired in 2005. He enjoyed traveling throughout his life, including a one-year trip with a travel trailer though the U.S. and Canada and has hiked Mount Diablo in California numerous times with his friend and hiking partner, Becky. In 2007, Ray and his wife, Hannelore, hiked coast to coast across England. His last love was to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2009. He was very proud of the fact that his sister, Joanne, was able to trace three of their ancestors back to the Mayflower and he was a member of the California Mayflower Society.

He is survived by his wife, Hannelore Trochim Heizer of Concord; son, Charles E. (Tracy) Heizer of Tracy, Calif.; son, Peter T. Heizer of San Francisco; daughter, Suzanne E. (Tim) Needham of Hong Kong; mother, Harriet S. (Happy) LeMoine of Hastings, Minn., formerly of Oconomowoc; sister, Joanne D. Heizer (Mark) Hetzel of Hastings; sister-in-law, Brenda S. Heizer of Eau Claire; and brother-in-law, Edward (Hanna) Trochim of Germany. He has four grandsons, Collin and Peyton Heizer of Tracy, Calif., and Tristan and Siegfried Needham of Hong Kong. He also has five nieces, one nephew, two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Thomas Heizer Jr. of Ryland, Ky., and his brother, Theodore (Ted) Squires Heizer of Eau Claire.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Nov. 18, at the United Methodist Church, 955 Moraga Road, Lafayette, CA 94549. After the service there was a gathering in the fellowship hall.
