Shirley May Brown

Shirley May Brown of Waukesha died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Avalon Square at the age of 88. She was born May 28, 1923, the oldest of seven children, and grew up in Roanoke, Va.

Her pioneer spirit began with her first job as the first female in cost accounting during World War II for the American Viscose rayon plant. At 80, she retired from the Washington, D.C., Patent Office where she was a librarian and computer research instructor. She was an adventurous type who never lost interest in learning and enjoyed traveling throughout the world. An avid reader, she was a member of the American Library Association and served as a trustee of the Waukesha Public Library Board for 13 years. She adhered to a healthy lifestyle throughout her life and was a member and committee secretary for the YWCA for several years. She was active in the League of Women Voters and also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi. She was artistic, played the piano and studied genealogy.

Surviving are her daughters, Alice of Waukesha, Clara of Thiensville and Barbara of Ames, Iowa; son, Robert of Madison; and five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

A private family memorial service will be held.
