Hubert C. ‘Nick’ Knilans

Hubert C. “Nick” Knilans, 94, of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Veterans Home. Nick was born in Delavan on Dec. 27, 1917, the son of the late Clarence G. and Laura (Nott) Knilans.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a highly decorated pilot receiving awards from the British Distinguished Services Order, the Canadian Distinguished Flying Cross and the U.S. Flying Cross. After the war, he retired from the USAAF as a major and became a teacher in California. After 25 years, including two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria, he retired in 1978.

He is survived by his sister, Janice Higgenbotham of Cannon Falls, Minn.; his nephews, Eric and Nick Higgenbotham; and his nieces, Maureen Konley and Tanis Kahabka-Knilans.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Laura Knilans; three brothers, Lawrence, James and Meredith Knilans; and one sister, Frances Mahar.

Services were held Wednesday, June 6, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home-Olson Hall Chapel with chaplain Rich Engle officiating. Military graveside services will follow in the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King.
