Ella B. Garvens
Ella B. Garvens of Waukesha passed away peacefully Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the age of 97.
She was a longtime worker at the A&P Store in Waukesha at the age of 16 as the bookkeeper, the head cashier and as the A&P supervisor. She started out in South Milwaukee and went to the new A&P store in Waukesha when it first opened in 1947. She had many more years in Waukesha after that and worked there until she retired. Ella married Edward Duehring and they had a son, Eugene, together. They also had four grandchildren, Patti, Laurie, Debbie and Tommy. Her four grandchildren all live in California now. Long after Ella’s retirement, her brother, Leo Kollath, moved in with her and took care of her. When he could not take care of her anymore, his oldest daughter, Coralee Perschon-Fell, and Coralee’s husband, Albert, moved in to take care of the both of them. Leo passed away Aug. 20, 2010. Aunt Ella was in very good health for her age, even better than Coralee was (who has held a full-time job for the last 30 years at River Hills Nursing home in dietary. In a few years, she and Albert will move to Clintonville). Ella had three sisters, Lorrain and the twins, Dorothy and Dolly; and two brothers, Leo and Arnold Kollath. She then married Charles Garvens after Edward’s death. His children became like her own.
Ella will be dearly missed by her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Duehring; her grandchildren, Patti Brown, Laurie Duehring, Debra A. Steward and Tommy Duehring of California; her nieces and nephews, Coralee, Monty, Lori, Joe and Leo Jr. Kollath, Carl, Wally, David, the twins, Dick, Roger Zersow, Jerry, James, Donnie and Ronnie Schmidt, Charlie, Joyce, Beverly, Bonnie Newby and Shirley Kollath; stepdaughter, Sheryl Dacquisto (who was like a daughter to Ella); stepsons; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other family and friends.
Ella was preceded in death by her parents, Laura and Carl Kollath; son, Eugene Duehring; sisters, Dorothy Schmidt, Doris “Dolly” Zerzow and Lorraine Ziegler; brothers, Arnold and Leo Kollath; brother-in-law, Raymond Schmidt; nephews, Dale Kollath, John Schmidt and Dean Newby; and a sonin-law, Nick Dacquisto.
Visitation for Ella will be held from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Thursday, May 10, at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, 237 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha. The Rev. Michael Turriff will officiate the service. Burial will immediately follow at Prairie Home Cemetery.
