Melvin Oimoen

June 1, 1936 – May 28, 2012

Melvin Kern Oimoen, a longtime resident of Genesee, and most currently Winchester, slipped away to meet his wife, Nancy, early Monday, May 28, 2012.

He was born to Alfred and Viola Oimoen on June 1, 1936, in Genesee.
Melvin graduated from Waukesha High School in 1954, and then continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, until he enlisted in the service. He served more than six years in the reserves.

He married the love of his life, Nancy Jane Mann, on Aug. 2, 1958, at First United Methodist Church in Waukesha, and honeymooned at Evan’s Alpine Lodge in Manitowish Waters. Since childhood, Melvin’s family would travel to the northwoods for fishing vacations, and his love of the northwoods continued throughout his entire life. He shared that love with his children by taking them camping and fishing in northern Wisconsin, and those values have continued on into their lives, as well as his grandchildren’s lives.

Melvin held many positions during his life: He worked on the farm in his teens, drove an ice cream route for Hawthorne Melody and owned his own liquor store – Mel’s Elixir Shoppe – in Genesee Depot. He also enjoyed assisting the Schuett family on their farm, hauling grain and disking fields, until his retirement in the late ’80s.

Melvin and Nancy built a retirement home in Winchester, and moved there full time in 2001. This was their dream, and their time together at the lake was cherished.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, in 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Alfred and Viola.

Surviving is a son, Jaimey (Sarah Meekma) of Waukesha; a daughter, Heather (Dennis) Holmes of Arbor Vitae; and his grandchildren, Ashley (Jeremiah Stromich) Weber, Samuel Weber, Jozette Weber and Shawn Holmes. Also surviving are many dear friends and relatives.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday, June 2, at Bolger Funeral Home, 212 W. Chicago Ave., Minocqua, then to Winchester for graveside services.
