Valentina Cervantes Tamez

Feb. 14, 1937 - Sept. 29, 2012

Valentina Cervantes Tamez passed away at home in Waukesha at the age of 75 years young, on a warm, sunny, fall afternoon, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.

Valentina was born in Thrall, Texas, to the late Manuel and Maria Cervantes, on Feb. 14, 1937.  She graduated from Waukesha High School in 1956 and married the love of her life, Guillermo Tamez, in 1958. Together they celebrated 53 years of marriage and raised 10 children.

Valentina and her husband owned and operated the Tamez Highway Market on St. Paul Avenue in Waukesha in 1968 and 1969. She went back to school earning her nursing degree and worked as a licensed practical nurse in a long-term care facility for 20-plus years before retiring.  While working as an LPN, Valentina obtained her real estate agent and brokers license, starting her own business, Tamez Realty. In 1992, Valentina was awarded the Individual Fair Housing award by the Department of Fair Housing. Always very proud of her heritage, Valentina did what she could to provide assistance to the Latino community, speaking at seminars for first-time home buyers at La Casa de Esperanza. Valentina appeared on local public television, where she instructed interested viewers on how to make homemade flour tortillas.

Valentina loved life and the good Lord. Her pride and joy in life was her family, repeatedly telling her children, I love you so much and dont you ever forget it!

Valentina is survived by her loving husband, Guillermo (Gorilla) Tamez, and their children, Juanita (Janie), Concepcion (Connie), Josephina (Josie), Gloria, Dora, Salvador (Sal), Pearl, Manuel, Theresa, Margarita (Margie) and Santiago (Jim), and their families (19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren), along with numerous other family members and close friends.

Valentina was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Maria Cervantes; her brother, Cipriano; and her sister, Nicholasa. They are now together again, as a family, in heaven.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
