James W. Bartel

James W. Bartel passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at the Alden Estates of Countryside in Jefferson after a courageous fight with cancer. Jim was born July 13, 1948, in Watertown, to Willard and Myrtle (nee Saeger) Bartel.


Jim served in the U.S. Army and was stationed on Okinawa, Japan. He was a lifelong member of Cross Lutheran Church, serving on the church board and several committees. He was a member of the Ashippun Sportsman Club, the Oconomowoc VFW Post 2260, the Three Lakes American Legion Post 0431 and the Three Lakes Red Suspenders Club. He also served on the Ixonia Planning Commission.


Jim was the owner of Bartel Builders-General Contractors since 1976. Jim loved spending time at Pinewwod Point in Three Lakes, his “country club up North.” He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and cooking.


Jim will be dearly missed by his wife, Janice (nee Wyssling) Bartel of Ixonia; his daughter, Amber (Todd) Knoll of Oconomowoc; and his son, Brent (Maren) Bartel of Arden Hills, Minn. He was the fond brother of Don (Zoe) Bartel of Mesa, Ariz., and Ellen (Larry) McDonald of Nashotah; and loving grandfather of Laken, James and Hudson David Bartel. He is also survived by several nieces, nephew, brothers- and sisters-in-law, other relatives and many friends.


Jim was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, uncles and cousins.


Visitation will be held from noon until the 3 p.m. celebration of Jim’s life Saturday, Oct. 20, at Cross Lutheran Church, W704 E. Gopher Hill Road, Ixonia. Committal services will take place at the church cemetery, where military honors will be performed.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cross Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
