Marie Christine Howard (nee Dop) passed away Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at the age of 90 from a stroke in Brookfield, at the home of her loving son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Pam Howard.
Marie was born in Texel, Holland on Nov. 26, 1923. She emigrated to the United States in 1929 with her mother, the late Augusta Radzus Dop, her father, the late Jacob Dop, and her sister, the late Claire Dop Tangney. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1940 and married the late Robert Reeve Howard after his World War II military service in 1946.
Marie was married to her husband for 48 years and lived in Glen Rock, N.J., where she was very active in the League of Woman Voters and helped found the Glen Rock Public Library. She raised her family of three sons in Wallingford, Pa., where she was a college administrator for Penn Morton College (Widener University). Upon retirement, Marie and her husband Robert moved to Chatham, Mass., where she and Robert founded the Chatham Unitarian Church. She loved her family, nature, particularly birds and flowers, history, poetry and mysteries. Marie moved to Brookfield in 2007 to live with her eldest son and daughter-in-law, Evan and Pam Howard.
Marie is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Dop Mueller and Paul Mueller of Springfield, Mass.; three sons, Evan Bruce Howard of Brookfield, Steven Robert Howard of Hampton Bays, N.Y., and Mark Everett Howard of Madison; and four grandchildren, Margaux, Monique, Keenan and McKenna.
A memorial service will be held at her beloved Cape Cod in the spring.
