George K. Harris

George K. Harris passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at the age of 95. He was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Waukesha.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Blaine Harris and Mabel Kilpatrick Harris, and a sister, Edith King of Palm Beach, Fla. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Ann Schlickelman (Margie), and their son, George R. Harris.

 

He is survived by their children, Suzanne Nicholson of Carrollton, Texas, and Thomas Harris (Mary) of Mill Valley, Calif., and daughter-in-law, Sandra Harris of Grand Prairie, Texas; five grandchildren, Amy Scaling (Sam) of Henrietta, Texas, Leigh Hilton (James) and Wendy Cage (Rominal) of Denton, Texas, David Kovsky (Lauren) of Boulder, Colo., and Christopher Harris (Robin) of Garland, Texas; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan Scaling and Jessica (Scaling) Powers, Matthew and Brad Hilton, Bailey Cage, and Brittany and Brandon Harris. The eldest of nine children, he is survived by James Harris, Virginia Harris and Richard Harris of Waukesha, Joan Steward of Chicago, Jean Beaster of Waco, Texas, Nan Letson of Lake Worth, Fla., and Bruce Harris of Glenwood City.

 

He was in the airline business in a number of capacities from 1939 to 1953. George and Margie founded the G.K. Harris Sales Co. in 1953 and sold it in 1978. They built a second home in Estes Park, Colo., in 1982 and divided their time between there and Dallas for 19 years before selling the Colorado home in 2000. They belonged to the Las Colinas Country Club from 1964 to 2001. George was an avid golfer and had two holes-in-one at the LCCC. He was a member of the Estes Park Menís Golf Association and served as president in 1988. He and Margie were active in the Estes Park Summer Residents Association, and George served as president in 1993. They enjoyed working together in business as well as golf, bridge and travel.

 

A private family memorial is planned.
