brother of William, Reidar and Elwood Smith and proud father of Laura
Smith of Neenah, Dick (Debbie) Smith of Springfield, Ill., Sandy
Cunningham (John Lockwood) of Colgate, Glen (Becky) Smith of Plymouth and
Charlie (Lisa) Smith of Mukwonago. He is further survived by his

Garvin was a proud 1949 graduate of Kamehameha School for Boys in
Honolulu, where he served as class president and made lifelong friends and
ohana. He graduated from Carroll College in 1953 and had been a faithful
advocate for and supporter of Carroll throughout his life. He served in
the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was employed for 38 years and retired
from Textile Kraft/Tekra Corp. in New Berlin. Together Garvin and Ginny
raised their family in Neenah and retired in Waukesha.
To call Stretch an avid sports fan would be an understatement. He enjoyed
success as an athlete throughout the years, but his passion was both in
coaching and supporting any and all sporting events. Stretch was inducted
into the Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979, and was honored in
April 2012 as a distinguished alumnus.
A memorial service for Stretch will be held in the Humphrey Memorial
Chapel at Carroll University on Sunday, Jan. 13. Visitation starts at 2
p.m., with the memorial service at 3 p.m. and reception to follow. The
family requests that you wear a Hawaiian shirt or dress if possible.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Garvin and Virginia
Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund at Carroll University.
