DELAFIELD

Barbara Ann Nelson

Dec. 10, 1930 – July 21, 2013

Barbara Ann Nelson of Delafield, a longtime Wauwatosa and, earlier, Waukesha English teacher, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Aurora Medical Center, Summit, after a brief illness. She was 82.

Barbara taught many years at Wauwatosa East High School, retiring in 1987.

Earlier, she taught at what was Waukesha High School, then just off the downtown area, and, before that, first at Reedsburg High School, then at Watertown High School.

An avid Shakespearean scholar, she traveled to Great Britain 26 times in the summer, establishing close friendships there, taking in a number of Shakespearean productions and touring the United Kingdom with friends, by motor car.

In the Nelson family, she was known for her generosity and flawless memory of dates and family events.

She showered her siblings, nieces and nephews with birthday and holiday gifts, and relished her role as the Nelson historian, confidently answering even the most obscure questions.

Barbara was born in the early years of the Great Depression, on Dec. 10, 1930, in Milwaukee. She was a graduate of Cushing School, Delafield; Waukesha High School; and Carroll College (now Carroll University). She earned her master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

After retiring as a Wauwatosa teacher, she moved from that Milwaukee suburb to the family’s longtime home on Mill Street, alongside Lake Nagawicka, in Delafield.

Her late parents, Al and Mildred Hubel Nelson, had lived there.

She is survived by her sister, Marian Jones of Dousman; a brother, Bill Nelson of Brookfield; nephews Mark Jones, Los Angeles; Matthew Jones, Dousman; Chris Nelson, Augusta, Wis.; Brian Nelson, Brookfield; and a niece, Brenda Davis, Brookfield; her sister’s two stepdaughters, Beth Hubrecht, Madison; and Grace Page, Callahan, Fla.; and grandnephews, Dylan Jones, Dousman; Tim Nelson, Augusta; Forrest and Chris Davis, Brookfield; Miles, Quentin, Keegan and Hayden Nelson, Brookfield; and grand-nieces, Erin Nelson, Milwaukee, Madeline Jones, Dousman, and Sydney and Isabella Nelson, Brookfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, at Delafield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Jensen officiating.

Burial will be in The Gardens of Stone Bank, in Waukesha County’s Stone Bank, north of Delafield.

Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service.

Memorials are suggested for Delafield Presbyterian Church or Carroll University, Waukesha.
