Richard Garth Allen

Richard Garth Allen, 79 of Auburn, Ala., went to be with our Lord on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013. Richard was born Oct. 5, 1934, in Superior. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a master’s degree in secondary school counseling in 1961. Richard retired in 1993 after being a guidance counselor/ director at Brookfield Central High School for 32 years. He and his wife, Mary-Jo, resided in Sussex before retiring to their home on Crystal Lake in Iron River. This became a place for family and friends to gather together in fellowship for many years.

Richard was loved by many. He met the love of his life, Mary-Jo Arndt, in the ninth grade. They celebrated 57 wonderful years together.

Mr. Allen began his career at Roosevelt Jr. High School in Beloit in 1957. In 1961, he continued his work as a guidance counselor at Brookfield Central High School until his retirement in 1993. He was active in the following organizations: Milwaukee Suburban Guidance, Wisconsin School Counselors, American College Testing, and he was president of the Wisconsin Association of College and Secondary School Admission Counselors, where he made presentations at their national conventions.

As a counselor, his primary role was to help students develop a path for continuing their education.

Richard is survived by his wife, Mary-Jo Allen; two sons, Ric Allen of Brookfield and Robb Allen (Beth) of Green Bay; a daughter, Julie DeBaets (David) of Auburn; a brother, Stanley (Jean); sister- in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ron Rep; 11 grandchildren, Jordan, Sydney, Hailey, Josh, Jessica, Chantelle, Trevor, Katie, Casey, Lucas and Breanne; and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home in Opelika, Ala., with Dr. George Matthison officiating. Interment was in Town Creek Cemetery, Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the EAMC Cancer Center, Opelika; AUMC Missions, Auburn; or Barnes Community Church Missions, Barnes.
