Avis H. Hoefs

H. Hoefs, 95, of Waukesha, went home to be with her lord and savior
Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Linden Grove, surrounded by her loving
family. She was born in Winona, Minn., on Aug. 31, 1918, the daughter of
Albert C. and Henrietta A. (Trester) Brand.
Avis was united in marriage Sept. 28, 1935, in Rockford, Ill., to Erwin
P. Hoefs. During World War II, she was a member of the Grey Ladies. Avis
was employed at J.C. Penney for 25 years and for 15 years with the
Godfrey Co., where she was the accounts payable supervisor. She was a
charter member of the Sweet Adelines, where she traveled to many of
their national conventions. Avis was a lifelong member of Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church, and she had taught Sunday school there.
Surviving are her loving children, Darwin (Judy) Hoefs, Karen (the late
Merlin) Harder, Marlene (Warren) Nader, Sandra (Jerry) Kennedy and
George Hoefs. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 27
great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one sister-
in-law, Joyce Brand of Vero Beach, Fla. Avis is further survived by
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Erwin P. Hoefs, on
Jan. 11, 1992; two brothers, Everret Brand and Howard Brand; and an
infant sister; Velma Brand.
The visitation for Avis will be held from 4 p.m. until the 6 p.m.
funeral service Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran
Church, 1052 White Rock Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. The Rev. Scott
Oelhafen will be officiating. Private interment will take place at
Prairie Home Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Avis may be given to Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church (please see address above), or to Living
Word Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2712 Sussex Lane, Waukesha, WI 53188.
