Judith Jean (Gehling) Christiansen

Nov. 7, 1923 – April 21, 2014

Judith Jean Christiansen passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Orem, Utah, on April 21, 2014, after having the opportunity to visit with family members and friends. She was born to Robert and Mildred (Monson) Gehling in Oconto Falls, and spent her years growing up in Suring. She was the second of three children.

She graduated from Suring High School in 1941 and from the Green Bay Cosmetology School in 1942. She worked as a cosmetologist in Green Bay, Oconto Falls and Waukesha. She was the owner of two salons – Beauty Plaza and Cameo Beauty Salon in Waukesha.

She married Lawrence (Larry) Christiansen in Suring on Oct. 4, 1946. She and Larry had four children – LeAnn Marie (married to W. Steve Albrecht) of Orem, Utah; Jerry (who died at birth); Kathy Jo (married to Peter Mehling) of New Berlin; and Kay Joy Reiber of Orem. She has 13 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Judy loved going to their family home in Suring, where she had many fond memories. She loved spending time with her brothers and their families and her children. She was a dedicated Green Bay Packers fan. Her family was most important in her life.

In 1968 Judy joined the LDS Church, along with her daughters LeAnn, Kathy and Kay.

In 1985, Larry and Judy moved to Orem, where she lived until passing away. She was active in the LDS church and loved doing genealogy and gardening.

Judy was an amazingly active person. She rarely went to bed before 1 or 2 a.m. and she was always up by 7 a.m. Until in her 80s, she continued to participate in activities with her daughters and grandchildren, including going down water slides, riding in the mountains, riding snowmobiles and attending soccer and ballgames. She was thrilled when her favorite Wisconsin store – Kohl’s – opened in Utah. Her children and grandchildren loved her wit and humor and her direct way of telling them what she thought. You always knew where you stood with Judy. She was always ready for a good debate about politics.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mildred (Monson) Gehling; husband, Lawrence (Larry) Christiansen (1992); son Jerry (1950); and brother Curtis Gehling (2011). Her brother Jerry Gehling lives in Suring.

Funeral services have been arranged by the Sundburg Olpin Mortuary in Orem and the Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring.
