July 25, 1938 ó Aug. 7, 2014
Robert O. (Bob) Kautzer, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 7, 2014.
Bob was born in Manitowoc on July 25, 1938, to Ronald & Lucille (Skaren) Kautzer. He married the former Rosemary Sell on June 9, 1962, at St. Johnís Lutheran Church, Sullivan. Bob was a longtime teacher and principal from 1959 until his retirement in 1993. Success of his students and teachers were top priorities. Even to-date he took pride in knowing each student by name and recalling events from their school years.
Bobís working-class family instilled strong values and responsibilities that he carried throughout his life. He was a Manitowoc native and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956, with his junior year spent in Pickstown, S.D. Post high school, he attended Manitowoc County Teachers College, where he played championship college basketball. He earned a bachelorís degree from UW-Whitewater and a masterís degree. Prior to teaching, Bob worked many jobs including: golf caddie, stock boy, laborer at Manitowoc Shipyards, Eastmans, Weyerhauser, Lad Lake Boys School, bartending and steel work on the Oahe Dam in Pierre, S.D. Bob enlisted in the Army on his 18th birthday and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Post Army, he began his teaching career at Dousman Elementary School in Waukesha County, where he met his future wife, Rosemary, while teaching together. In 1964, Bob accepted a teaching position in Manitowoc where he and Rosemary have since resided and raised their family, which was his pride and joy. Bob often said coming back to Manitowoc to accept a teaching position was the most significant move of his professional career. He taught elementary school at Monroe, Jefferson and Stangel schools, spent time as a principal intern and proudly served as principal at Jackson and Franklin schools.
Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman, trap shooter and golfer. The family enjoyed traveling, camping and boating. Bob and Rosemary enjoyed their cottage on the Menominee River near Wallace, Mich. During the winter, they traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for several months each year after retirement. Bob was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, holding various positions over the years. He was also a lifetime member of the Manitowoc Gun Club.
