Bernard ‘Bernie’ Joseph Benka Jr.

Bernard “Bernie” Joseph Benka Jr., 54, of Sparta, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, peacefully at home. Bernie was born February 20, 1960, to Bernard J. and Helen (Sonby) Benka in Superior and grew up in Okauchee. In 1973, his family moved to Sparta. Bernie was a 1978 Sparta High School graduate and then later joined the United States Army for three years. Bernie traveled with his parents throughout Texas, then moving to Las Vegas where he worked at Caesars Palace. When he lived in Milwaukee, he worked at Potowatami and spent many years working at Leer Inc. in New Lisbon. Bernie loved to travel, go fishing, camping and was a devoted Packers fan.
He is survived by his son, Christian; siblings, Patricia (Larry) Faught of Oconomowoc, Elizabeth “Liz” (Bill) Schneller of Sparta, and Richard Burke of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Patti Benka; many nieces and nephews; a great-niece; along with other relatives and friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Bernard, and a brother, Eugene Benka.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home, 211 West Oak St., Sparta. Burial with full military honors will be at in the Farmer’s Valley Cemetery, rural Sparta. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
