Mary Jane Hopf

Mary Jane Hopf of Waukesha passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at LindenGrove Health Center in Waukesha at the age of 86. She was born in Milwaukee on May 21, 1927, the daughter of John C.
and Grace A. (nee Cleary) Griesel. Mary Jane married David Own Hopf on Dec. 1, 1951.
A 1945 graduate of Waukesha High School, Mary Jane obtained her nursing education at the University Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago and at St. Johnís School of Nursing Education in Springfield, Ill. She graduated in 1948 as a cadet nurse through the U.S. government program. She also completed post-graduate work in psychiatry at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Mary Jane was employed as a registered nurse at the Veteranís Hospital in Milwaukee and later at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She retired in 1983 after 35 years of nursing. Mary Jane was active in the Womanís Society at Salem United Methodist Church for many years.
She did volunteer work at the Northview Home as well as other projects in Waukesha. Mary Jane enjoyed her home and family. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed listening to music, attending seminars, refinishing furniture, gardening and traveling.
Mary Jane will be sadly missed by her daughters, Mary Chambers of St. Charles, Iowa, Julie (Eric) Muehls and Christine (Jerry) Kawatski of Waukesha and Jeanne (Michael) Furrer of Dousman. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Randy Hopf of Wales; her grandchildren, Angela, Charlie, Danielle, Harley, Jacob, Joe, John, Michael, Nicole and Richard; and her great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Daniel, Marcello, Mia, Natalie, Tyler and Zach. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, David Hopf; a daughter, Theresa Jan Areas; parents, John and Grace Griesel; and sister, Carol Ann Howard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Salem United Methodist Church in Mary Janeís name would be appreciated.
A memorial gathering will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Salem United Methodist Church, 541 Highway 59, Waukesha, with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Interment of her cremated remains will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha.
