Gerald A. ‘Gerry’ Stromseth

Gerald A. “Gerry” Stromseth of Oconomowoc passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. Born in Bancroft, Iowa, May 1, 1925, to parents Mabel (Tollefson) and Alvin O.

Stromseth, he moved with his family to Atwater, Minn., in the early 1930s.

July 1944 saw him inducted into the Army at Fort Snelling, Minn. He received training as a surgical technician and served in an Army Evac Hospital unit in Germany during World War II.

Following an honorable discharge, Gerry completed his degree in economics at St. Olaf College in 1948. For 12 years, he worked at Atwater Minnesota State Bank and continued studies with the Minnesota School of Banking. In 1949, Gerry married Betty Andersen, also a St. Olaf graduate. The family grew to include Lynn (1951), Janet (1953), and John (1955).

Gerry and the family moved to Oconomowoc in 1961, where he was employed as managing officer of the Oconomowoc Savings and Loan. As Savings and Loan grew, it merged with Security Savings, where Gerry became vice president until his retirement in 1990. In the community, Gerry served as Rotary treasurer for 13 years, on the finance committee of Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital Board and on the Shorehaven Board of Directors. He also gave active support and service to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Darlene.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty; his brother, Walter (Betty Ann) Stromseth; a sister, Billi (Vern) Faillettaz; children, Lynn (Alex) Kamola, Janet Stromseth and John (Marnie) Stromseth; eight grandchildren, Isaac, Stefan, Anneliese, Matthew, Amanda, Jennifer, Benjamin and Nathan; five great-grandchildren, Harvey, Danniel, Kaylee Sue, Zoey and Andrew (AJ); and several nieces, nephews, and other “adopted” children.

Visitation will be held from noon today, Jan. 16, until the 2 p.m. service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 145 Lisbon Road, Oconomowoc. Full military honors to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church are appreciated.
