Willard ‘Red’ W. Zellmer
Feb. 6, 1924 — June 21, 2014
Willard “Red” W. Zellmer passed away on June 21, 2014, at AngelsGrace Hospice.
He was born in Vernon on February 6, 1924, to Walter and Mary (Schumacher) Zellmer. Willard married Darlene Collins on August, 21 1943, in McGregor, Iowa. Red got his nickname because of his red hair, which was inherited from his dad. All the Zellmer boys had red hair and to his delight, his great-grandson Chase Steffen was blessed with his red hair.
Red was a quiet, caring father, grandfather, great-grandfather and father-inlaw.
He was always a lover of golf, cars and racing. His great-grandson Jake Zellmer is seeking a career in auto racing.
He was an excellent golfer. Red and Darlene spent most of their free time golfing with friends. He often talked about the last time he “broke” 80 at Rivermoor Country Club.
Shortly after Red’s retirement in 1984, they moved to Rotunda West, Fla., so the could golf nearly everyday, and they did just that. Red “modified” his golf cart to get more speed out of it. That was Red! They decided to return to Wisconsin to be close to their family.
Because of Red’s love for anything to do with cars, he started his automotive career at Yonker Chevrolet as a mechanic. As the years went by, he decided to go into business for himself. He started out by running the Mobil Station on Bluemond and Calhoun in Brookfield. After a few years, he decided it was time to open up his own repair shop in Waukesha. When his business grew, he purchased the property at 1230 The Strand and built a new building to house Zellmer & Son Auto Repair. Red ran the business until his retirement in 1984 and sold it to his son Denny.
Red will be remembered to all as an honest, hardworking, great guy and friend to everyone he met.
Red is survived by his son Denny (Jean) and daughter Judy (Rick) Steffen; grandchildren, David (Amy) Zellmer, Tyler (Jenny Murphy) Steffen and Trisha (Mike Pointek) Steffen; and great-grandchildren Chase Steffen and Jake Zellmer. He also leaves behind sister Virginia Hansen as well as many nieces and nephews.
Red was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary; his beloved wife of 67 years, Darlene, in 2010; and brothers Raymond and Leo. A visitation will be held on Monday, June 30, from 9:30 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, N35W23360 Capitol Drive, City of Pewaukee. Entombment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to AngelsGrace Hospice in Oconomowoc are appreciated.
