Thomas R. McCartan


Thomas R. McCartan of Brookfield was called home on March 13, 2014, at the age of 92. Tom died peacefully in his cherished home surrounded by his beloved family.

He was preceded in death by his “sweetheart,” wife Hilda.

He was the treasured father of Kathleen, Michael and Patrick; proud grandfather of Becky Dinius (Joe) and Kelly Radomski (Chris); and loving great-grandfather “Boppa” to Julia, Katie, Jake Dinius and Noah, Maura Radomski. Tom was the oldest of seven and is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister Kathleen Metzelfeld, brother Robert (Sandy) McCartan, and many special nieces and nephews.

In 1941, Tom entered the military and served for 36 months in the Aleutian Islands, where he earned not only respect of his commanding officer, but also two letters of commendation.

Tom started McCartan Appraisal Co. in 1951 and later earned his MAI designation. He had been Realtor of the Year, state director of the Wisconsin Realtors Association and president of the Waukesha County Board of Realtors. He served the city of Brookfield as an alderman for 16 years, was Common Council president for six years, on the Board of Appeals for 12 years, and he also served on the Planning Commission. Tom was charter president of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and a founding member of St. John Vianney Church.

A visitation will be held at the Becker Ritter Funeral Home today, March 18, from 4 PM to 7 PM. Additional visitation will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1755 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield, on Wednesday, March 19, from 10:30 AM until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM. A graveside service will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Elm Grove.

Memorials in Tom’s name may be given to Nativity Jesuit Middle School or Elmbrook Humane Society.

Tom led an outstanding and exemplary life. A proud Irishman, known for his wit and wisdom, he will be missed by many.
